OTTAWA, Canada: Kashmir Solidarity Day was observed at the Pakistan High Commission in the Canadian Capital Ottawa in support of the just struggle of the people of Indian Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

The event was largely attended by Kashmiris and Canadians of Pakistani origin.

While speaking on the occasion, the Acting High Commissioner of Pakistan to Canada Muhammad Saleem underlined the importance of resolving the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with the UN resolutions and the aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Muhammad Saleem said that Pakistan has always supported the right to self-determination of Kashmiris and will continue to do so. He informed that the situation in Indian Occupied Kashmir has deteriorated not only from a human rights perspective but also with regards to freedom of information as restrictions have been placed on the international media and NGOs including Amnesty International.

“Today’s gathering is to raise awareness of the plight of the Kashmiris in Indian Occupied Kashmir. As a result of excessive and indiscriminate use of force thousands of civilians have been killed and injured in occupied Kashmir,” added the Acting High Commissioner.

The Acting High Commissioner highlighted that the Report of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on Jammu and Kashmir calls for the expedited establishment of a Commission of Inquiry to look into the human rights situation in Indian Occupied Kashmir.

Muhammad Saleem also urged the international community to fulfil their commitments towards the people of Jammu & Kashmir under the UN Security Council resolutions.

Earlier the messages of President Dr. Arif Alvi and Prime Minister Imran Khan were also read at the event.
