ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: National Highway Authority (NHA) is taking concrete measures to control overloading in order to prevent its highways from being damaged.

As part of such efforts, the NHA has established weigh stations on its entire network to ensure load limits as per National Highway Safety Ordinance-2000, says an official of the ministry of communications.

The official said currently there were 96 operational weigh stations- both permanent and mobile across National Highways and Motorways.

In addition, he added the NHA was expanding establishment of weigh stations in a planned manner and in accordance with prioritized demands of the regions.

It can be witnessed, he added, that where the Axle load control was enforced, the life span of these Highways remained satisfactory.

On Motorways however, he added there was strict control on overloading at the entry point of each interchange was observed.

The official also said effective measures had been made to regulate traffic, ensure safety and provide assistance to road users.

“Road safety is always given first and utmost priority. All violations are checked with zeal and zest especially the violations which endanger the precious lives and property of commuters,” the official added.

He said 138 speed checking cameras had been provided to all zones of NH&MP and over speeding was being checked with modern gadgets and cameras on day and night basis.

He said as many as 3,12,530 tickets had been issued to the violators of over speeding in year 2015 whereas 2,83,120 tickets were been issued to the violators from January to June 2016.

He added speed checking was being carried out by patrolling officers and speed checking squads with help of day and night speed checking cameras.

He said the locations of speed checking cameras were being changed at regular intervals, adding as far as overtaking of vehicles is concerned, it was worth to mention that Motorway consists of three lanes.
