SRINAGAR: A complete shutdown is being observed on Friday in occupied Kashmir on the call of the entire Hurriyet leadership on the occasion of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the territory.

The shutdown is aimed at conveying a message to the Indian prime minister that the people of Kashmir reject New Delhi’s illegal occupation of Jammu and Kashmir and want settlement of this dispute as per relevant UN resolutions.

This is Modi’s first visit to Jammu and Kashmir since he became the country’s prime minister on May 26 after his party the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) clinched a sweeping victory in general elections.

In response to the shutdown call, shops, educational institutions, public transport and other businesses remain closed in Srinagar and other major towns of the Valley.
