SocietyChristian MPA resigns over Badami Bagh violence

LAHORE: Pervaiz Rafiq, a Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP) MPA from Punjab on Sunday tendered his resignation in protest against Badami Bagh violence, Dispatch News Desk (DND) reported.

An outraged mob on Saturday attacked and set ablaze more than 150 houses of Christian community in Josephabad Colony of Lahore over alleged blasphemous remarks against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by Sawan Masih, a 28-year-old Christian sanitation worker.

The Punjab government has failed to protect minorities, Rafiq told reporters, adding that the Badami Bagh violence is an open proof of failure of the Punjab government and law enforcers. He said Police officials made no attempt to stop or arrest the vandals and miscreants.

“Christians are also the citizens of Pakistan. They cannot remain part of the assembly, which cannot protect its citizens,” Rafiq said.
