ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Ministry of Energy has refuted a report by Dawn News which says the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has notified an increase of up to Rs 2.97 per unit in electricity rates.

In a statement on Tuesday, the ministry said that the electricity tariff increase figures of Rs 2.97 per unit as reported are wrong as the government has already planned tariff retirement and enforcement to absorb any additional increase with no or minimum increase.

The ministry said that due to advance planning, nearly the same amount of adjustments are retiring exactly on the same date when new will be enforced thus bringing the net increase to a much minimal level.

The energy minister further said that there is no tariff increase and 3 quarterly tariff adjustments (QTAs) approved by the NEPRA for Rs 1.60 replaced Rs 1.59 as of October 1, 2021 hence the net impact on consumers is not Rs 2.9 but 01 paisa.

“The headline created a wrong impression in the mind of the readers,” the minister said.
