PEMRA Bans Gala Biscuit Ad – But Why?

You must have been noticing a colourful ad flashing on your television screens these days which makes you wonder, what this ad is actually all about? Mehwish Hayat is dancing all around in exhiliration on the seemingly exorbitant set merely just for a biscuit ad? This is something not easy to digest. Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) couldn't consider Mehwish Hayat's dance moves a normal cultural depiction of Pakistan and so the ad has got banned. However, here we have got some of out own reasons regarding why there is something wrong with this ad. Check out all of these details and our view on it! PEMRA Bans Gala Biscuit Ad - But Why? PEMRA has considered Gala Biscuit ad to contain indecent content and that's why banned it. As per the details, senior journalist Ansar Abbasi brought the matter under the fire of criticism. He posted about the ad on Twitter as: In response to this tweet, the Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Ali Muhammad Khan also criticized this commercial and tweeted: However, this serious criticism got overlapped by Federal Minister for Science and Technology, Fawad Chaudhry's sarcasm as he tweeted: Following this criticism and furore against the ad and bold dance moves in Gala Biscuit ad, PEMRA Advisory Board decided to impose a ban. Here is the official notice: Furthermore, PEMRA also issued an advisory on the type of advertisement content that is permissible to go on-air. The notice also mentions that PEMRA has received several complaints regarding the TV commercials promoting indecency in the society. So, the regulatory authority has asked all TV channels to get visuals of advertisements, review them under In-House Monitoring Committee and then decide accordingly before telecasting. Here is Our Take On The Matter! It has been observed that most of the ads in Pakistan are out of context breaking link of the content from the purpose of the ad.   As Gala Biscuit's new ad is under discussion here so why not take it as an example? Take out a few seconds to imagine; when this ad went on-air, no one could have an idea that it is an ad to sell biscuits. The first point of failure emerges here for the idea on this ad and here we have got reasons: Taking into consideration the idea of this ad on technical grounds, too much of bright background as well as that of shimmery costumes can possibly distract viewers from the purpose of ad. Mehwish Hayat's dance is not in accordance either with the product or that of Pakistani culture.  Dancing is not an issue but "dancing to sell products" is not sophisticated. Mehwish Hayat's dance was more of any performance for a film and that needs viewers discretion for some people belonging to the 'conservative' society of Pakistan. Guess what? As this ad approaches the end, viewers almost forget if it was an ad for Gala Biscuit as it is just like a song from an upcoming movie. Gala Biscuit is an everyday use sort of an item that has nothing to do with dancing around in exhiliration.  The world of advertising is all about sensible creativity and Pakistan needs to focus on the content in this regard. Whether it is about Indian ad industry or that of anywhere across the globe, no one even imagines to compromise on the quality.  It's time to step out from selling tea, biscuits, dish washing bars, etc. with a dance performance. All brands need to revise ideas and bring something out-of-the-box acceptable for everyone in Pakistani society.  What is your view on PEMRA's decision and our technical take related to Gala Biscuit advertisement? Your valuable feedback can add to this write-up!

It has been observed that most of the ads in Pakistan are out of context, breaking the content’s link from the ad’s purpose.

As Gala Biscuit’s new ad is under discussion here, why not take it as an example? Take out a few seconds to imagine; when this ad went on-air, no one could have an idea that it is an ad to sell biscuits. The first point of failure emerges here for the concept of this ad, and here we have got reasons:

Reasons

  • Considering the idea of this ad on technical grounds, too much of bright background and that of shimmery costumes can distract viewers from the purpose of the ad.
  • Mehwish Hayat’s dance is not in accordance either with the product or that of Pakistani culture.
  • Dancing is not an issue but “dancing to sell products” is not sophisticated.
  • Mehwish Hayat’s dance was more of any performance for a film, and that needs viewers’ discretion for some people belonging to the ‘conservative’ society of Pakistan.
