US Embassy in Islamabad awards $20,000 in seed funding to women entrepreneurs

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The US Embassy in Islamabad has announced the winners of US$ 20,000 in seed grants to participants in the Embassy’s Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) program.

The US Embassy selected the winners through a pitch competition, the final activity for the 2024 cohort of AWE participants.

The five grants will help the winners grow and develop their businesses.

The winning women entrepreneurs included the following;

  1. Iman Khan (Peshawar) for her company, Gricks International, which produces building materials made from recycled plastic and repurposing plastic bottles as bricks to rebuild homes in flood-impacted areas and reduce plastic waste.
  2. Alishba Sajid (Rawalpindi) for Cardana Utensils which creates eco-friendly biodegradable plates and utensils.
  3. Sahar Munir (Quetta) for her delivery app “QuickUp,” that provides a fair and affordable delivery service for women-led businesses in Balochistan.

In addition to the top three winners, the Embassy awarded “honorable mentions” to:

  1. Sana Rehman (Quetta)for her Physiotherapy Clinic in Khanozai, Balochistan, that is addressing a significant gap in healthcare in that province.
  2. Zarmina Sanam (Lahore) for her educational services company, Skill2Success, which provides students from ages 5-18 with hands on learning experience focused on in robotics, coding, and Artificial Intelligence.

The AWE program provides enterprising women with the knowledge, networks, and access they need to launch and scale successful businesses.

This year’s cohort of 100 aspiring and established women entrepreneurs took part in a three-month online entrepreneurship course developed by the Thunderbird School of Global Management at Arizona State University; received mentoring from established Pakistani women entrepreneurs and built a network of support with other women-owned businesses.

25 Kharji terrorists killed, 11 injured in Tirah: ISPR

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan: The security forces have killed 25 terrorists of Fitna-Al-Khwarij including Kharji ring leader Abuzar alias Saddam and injured further 11 in Tirah valley of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Khyber district, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Tuesday.

The ISPR said that the security forces have been conducting extensive Intelligence Based Operations (IBOs) in Tirah valley since August 20, 2024 against Fitna-Al-Khwarij and so called Laskar-e-Islam and Jamat-ul- Ahrar, which have resulted into major setbacks to Fitna Al Khwarij and its affiliates.

It said that during these daring and highly successful operations based on robust intelligence, the security forces have so far successfully neutralized 25 Khwarij including Kharji ring leader Abuzar alias Saddam while 11 Khawrij have been injured.

However, the ISPR added, during the conduct of operations, four brave soldiers, having fought gallantly, paid the ultimate sacrifice and embraced Shahadat.

The ISPR said that the heavy losses inflicted upon Fitna Al Khwarij in these operations is testament to the valor and commitment of Security Forces to eliminate the menace of terrorism from the Country.

Rain with thunderstorm expected in Punjab & Sindh in next 36 to 48 hours

  • NDMA issues alert to relevant departments

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) of NDMA anticipated more rain, thunderstorm with gusty winds in most parts of Sindh and Punjab on August 27 and 28, 2024.

A deep depression is currently located near Runn of Kach Gujarat, India.

The system is approaching south east Pakistan including most parts of Sindh.

Under the influence of this system, Nagarparkar, Tharparkur, Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Dadu, Sanghae, Tando Allah Yar, Tandu Muhammad Khan, Umerkot and Mitiari are expected to experience heavy rainfall over the next 36-48 hours.

Thunderstorms are likely by afternoon, leading to heavy rains. A monsoon system is active over most parts of the Punjab province and it will lead to rainfall with isolated heavy falls in the next 36-48 hours.

Areas that are likely to be impacted include the twin cities, Potohar region, northeastern Punjab, central and southern Punjab, Gujranwala, Lahore and Sahiwal Division.

Some districts like Attock, Murree, Galliyat, Chakwal, TalaGang, Jhelum, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, Rahimyar Khan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Layyah, Muzaffargarh, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Chiniot, Multan, Khanewal, Lodhran, Khanpur, Sargodha, Mianwali, Khushab, Bhakkar, Kot Addu, Mandi Bahauddin are likely to receive rainfall with intermittent heavy falls in isolated places. Heavy downpour may lead to urban flooding in urban centers.

Rainfall will increase flows in local nullahs and rivers Heavy downpour/windstorm and lightning may affect daily routines, weak structures like roof/wall collapse of Kacha houses, electric poles, bill boards, vehicles and solar panels etc during the period.

Sacrifices in war against terrorism won’t go waste: PM Shahbaz

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has reiterated the unwavering resolve of his government and the armed forces of Pakistan to root out terrorism from the Country.

Presiding over the Federal Cabinet meeting held in Islamabad on Tuesday, he strongly condemned the terrorist incidents in Balochistan and other areas of the Country that resulted in the martyrdom of innocent Pakistanis including the security forces’ personnel.

The prime minister said that the sacrifices rendered by the people and the armed forces of Pakistan in the war against terrorism will not go waste.

Shahbaz Sharif said that the armed forces of Pakistan and the entire nation are committed for complete elimination of terrorism from the Country.

In addition, he said that all available resources would be provided to the armed forces to curb terrorism.

The prime minister said that doors of dialogue are open for those who believe in Pakistan and its constitution. However, no talks will be held with the enemies and terrorists.

Mohsin Naqvi visit Balochistan following BLA attacks

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Federal Minister for Interior Senator Mohsin Naqvi will pay a visit to Balochistan on Tuesday on the directive of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif following the recent incidents of terrorism across the terror-stricken province.

In Quetta, the Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti will preside over the meeting related to law and order.

The Provincial Ministers, the Balochistan Inspector General (IG) of Police Abdul Khaliq Sheikh, and top Officials of law enforcement agencies (LEAs) will participate in the meeting.

Earlier on Monday, at least 50 people including 14 security men were killed in various parts of Balochistan as dozens of militants affiliated with the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) went on a rampage across the province, storming police stations, blowing up railway tracks, and setting fire to almost three dozen vehicles.

In subsequent military operations, the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that the security forces and LEAs neutralized 21 militants in Balochistan.

With 12 solo photography exhibitions to his name, Azhar Hafeez’s black and white images and his four books – Bila Unwaan (Volumes 1 & 2), Laylpurya, and Photographer – reveal the subtle nuances of human experience through striking simplicity.
