MOSCOW: As this week marks the start of spring in Moscow, but the Russian capital has already been caught by heavy snowfall that is reported to have broken records of 50 years, turning the life into paralyzed.

The latest heavy snow fall that hit Moscow has crippled the life and becoming a nightmare for drivers with the capital’s commuters trapped in gridlock. Pedestrians are having a hard time, too, trying to make their way through ice and huge snowdrifts on the sidewalks.

Meanwhile, a number of flights have also been destined to be grounded at Moscow airports.

A couple of days ago weather forecasters had begun issuing warning to Moscow residents to brace for heavy snowfall this week.

On Tuesday, the federal weather bureau announced that the frosty, dry weather that the capital had been enjoying for the past week would change on Wednesday as clouds roll in and snow falls on parts of the Moscow region.

“We forecast snowfall of up to two centimeters,” a weather bureau official said, adding that in Moscow, residents should be on the lookout for black ice.

Snow would begin to fall heavily in Moscow on Wednesday and continue coming down through Saturday, dumping up to 18 centimeters over next few days, the weather bureau said.
