The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) foiled multiple attempts of drug trafficking in 2024 and apprehended individuals including those involved in Middle East-bound drug trafficking.

The Minister for Narcotics Control Mohsin Naqvi told the Lower House of the Parliament – National Assembly – that the ANF took stringent enforcement measures which helped in foiling attempts involving 262 Cases of drug trafficking at various Airports, Sea Ports and through various Courier & Parcel Companies.

The House was apprised that out of these foiled attempts, 31 Cases of illicit drug trafficking were specifically destined to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and 44 Cases were bound to the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Moreover, 14 Registered Cases (45.16%) were bound to the KSA and 23 Cases (52.27%) were destined to the UAE were reported in March and April 2024.

About the reasons of why the number of drugs traffickers were increased while going to Saudi Arabia and UAE during the last two months, it was told that they included the presence of large number of Pakistani diaspora in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Countries like Saudi Arabia and UAE; flow of Overseas Pakistanis in workers category having increased manifold in last five years; increased demand of drugs especially methamphetamine (ice), psy tablets and hashish in local markets of the GCC; and lucrative price of illicit drugs in local markets of the GCC.

However, it was added, the government has undertaken additional measures to check the increased trend of drug trafficking to Saudi Arabia and the UAE, such as enhanced special focus on GCC Countries bound flights in general and flights destined to KSA / UAE in particular; stringent enforcement measures at all international airports; and increased profiling of the passengers travelling to KSA and the UAE at all airports.
