KABUL/ISLAMABAD: The Afghans will cast their votes on Saturday in a second-round election to choose a successor to President Hamid Karzai.

The country’s presidential run-off election will be held between former foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah and ex-World Bank economist Ashraf Ghani amid tight security as the Afghan Taliban on Wednesday issued a new warning for people to stay away from the election.

The election came to a run-off poll after none of the competing candidates secured more than 50 percent of the total number of votes cast during the first round held on April 5, as required under the Constitution to win the election.

Pakistan takes additional security measures along Afghan border

Meanwhile, Pakistan has taken additional security measures along the border with Afghanistan ahead of the presidential election.

In her weekly media briefing in Islamabad on Thursday, the Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said the measures include enhanced vigilance and security along the border, increased patrolling and closure of border crossing areas.

The Foreign Office spokesperson said that the Afghan presidential election is a milestone in democratic journey of Afghan people. She said that Pakistan sincerely supports the cause of democracy and peaceful transition in Afghanistan.
