Kabul, Afghanistan: Afghan Taliban have intensified attacks on US-backed Turkestan Afghanistan Pakistan India (TAPI) gas pipeline.
According to available information, Taliban have laid down IEDs around gas pipeline and killed deminers who were trying to clean the area in southern Kandahar province on Monday morning.
Police chief Gen. Abdul Raziq confirmed the incident and stated that several deminers have been abducted by the gunmen. The incident took place in Malang Kariz area of Maiwand district.
The 1,814-kilometer gas pipeline will pass through Afghanistan to Pakistan and India. At least 816 kilometers of the pipeline will pass through the territory of Afghanistan where Afghan Taliban rule the land from dusk to dawn. A week ago the Taliban militants attacked Farah province where the TAPI gas pipeline will pass through.
Following the attack the head of the Natural Resources Monitoring Network said that the authorities of Afghanistan are unable to ensure the security of the gas pipeline.
It is believed that TAPI is US-backed energy project in the areas and Pakistan halted work on Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline to prefer TAPI under US directions.
