Kabul, Afghanistan: President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has issued a decree to confirm appointment of former Afghan intelligence chief Amrullah Saleh as minister for security sector reforms.

Amrullah Saleh who is a Tajik by birth belongs to Northern Alliance and was appointed as head of the National Directorate of Security (NDS) in December 2004. Saleh resigned from his post on June 6, 2010.

A close friend and operational commander of Ahmed Shah Masood, Saleh lived in Pakistan during 90s and received military training.

In 1997, he was appointed as liaison officer of Northern Alliance inside the Afghan Embassy in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. He is known for his close relations with intelligence agencies of Central Asia.

“Known as honest and proactive, Saleh will overhaul Afghan security sector and will enhance close contact with central Asian states”, commented Ali Muzafari who is a regional security observer from Kabul.
