ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said that Islamabad rejected a suggestion from the United States to join the Abraham Accords, according to remarks made during an interview with a private television channel.
The Abraham Accords, brokered by the United States in 2020, led to the normalization of diplomatic relations between Israel and several Arab states.
During the televised discussion, Khawaja Asif stated that Pakistan did not accept the US advice regarding participation in the accords. However, the Foreign Office has not yet issued any formal statement confirming the government’s official position on the matter. Last message of Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on his X was about his meetings in UN related activities and his X also does not have any mention of Abraham Accords issue.
Pakistan does not maintain diplomatic relations with Israel and has consistently linked any possible normalization to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The Foreign Office has so far remained silent on whether Washington formally approached Islamabad on the issue or whether the matter was discussed through diplomatic channels. An official in Islamabad with the condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to talk to media said that Abraham Accords under the wraps of economic, security and infrastructural development, is meant to help ONLY Israel to grow geographically, economically and geopolitically in the Middle East & beyond.
He further said:
Per these Accords (poison wrapped in the candy bar), Palestinian TWO STATE SOLUTION has been usurped completely by allowing Israel to eat up all the illegally annexed territory of Palestine, Lebanon and others. US full support and weight behind Abraham Accords is only meant to benefit Israel under this geopolitically sugar-coated poisonous agreement for the Middle Eastern countries of the region and Muslim countries beyond the Region.
Revival of Abraham Accords and making these be signed as a precondition, at this particular time, all of a sudden, when already Iran-US deal is witnessing the light of the day finally, clearly shows how Zionist-Christian lobby in US & beyond is hyperactive in furthering the hidden ulterior religious agenda across the world.
Another vicious purpose of bringing up Abraham Accords at this stage and linking them with any agreement to Iran conflict is to ensure that conflict with Iran never settles and broader peace in the Middle East is never realised as “Some countries”, as noted by Mr Trump himself, will NEVER sign on these Abraham Accords as these currently exist to only benefit Zionism and Israel for achieving its “Greater Israel” Agenda.
“There are reasons that no government in Pakistan can accept Israel with today’s boundaries because Pakistan has a stated position that a Two-State Solution means a Palestinian state within the same boundaries it had in 1967,” analysts and officials familiar with Pakistan’s policy argue.
The Abraham Accords, brokered by the United States in 2020 during Trump’s first presidency, led to the normalisation of relations between Israel and several Arab and Muslim-majority countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Morocco and Sudan. Under the agreements, participating states formally recognised Israel and expanded cooperation in trade, tourism, technology, investment and security.
Egypt and Jordan had already established diplomatic relations with Israel through earlier peace treaties.
The accords were widely viewed as a major foreign policy success for Trump because they broke with the long-standing Arab consensus that Israel would not be recognised until a Palestinian state was established.
Now, Trump is reportedly seeking a wider regional arrangement that could link future diplomacy involving Iran with an expanded Abraham Accords framework. According to international media reports and diplomatic discussions, countries such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey and Pakistan have been mentioned as potential participants in future normalisation efforts.
Trump has publicly advocated for closer economic and strategic cooperation between Israel and Muslim-majority nations, arguing that such alliances could reduce tensions and counter Iran’s regional influence.
However, critics say the proposal risks complicating already sensitive geopolitical negotiations by combining issues related to Iran, Israel and the Palestinian conflict into one broad diplomatic initiative.
Pakistan has maintained since its independence in 1947 that it will not recognise Israel until an independent Palestinian state is established. The policy enjoys broad political and public support within the country, and any shift is considered politically sensitive.
Observers note that recognising Israel could trigger strong opposition from religious groups, opposition parties and sections of the political establishment.
The issue has become even more contentious amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Many Muslim-majority countries argue that normalisation with Israel without meaningful progress on Palestinian statehood would amount to abandoning the Palestinian cause.
Public opinion across much of the Muslim world has also hardened against Israel because of its Gaza genocide, making diplomatic engagement more difficult for governments considering closer ties.
Analysts say Pakistan now faces a delicate balancing act between maintaining strong relations with the United States and Gulf allies while preserving its decades-old ideological and diplomatic position on Palestine.
They describe Trump’s renewed push for expanding the Abraham Accords as a significant regional test that could determine whether wider normalisation remains possible amid growing tensions and the continuing Gaza war.
