Abdul Kader Mullah to be hanged as Bangladesh's top court upholds his death sentence

DHAKA: The Supreme Court of Bangladesh on Thursday upheld the death sentence of Abdul Kader Mullah, a senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami party, for war crimes during the country’s 1971 independence war.

On Tuesday night, Abdul Kader Mullah got a stay of his execution hours before he was due to be executed at a jail in Dhaka on the grounds of alleged war crimes during the 1971 war.

However, the apex court headed by Chief Justice Muzammel Hussain on Thursday dismissed the appeal of senior leader of Jamaat-e-Islami party for a final review of his death sentence and said this paved the way for his execution.

The 65-year-old Abdul Kader Mullah was convicted in February of crimes against humanity during the country’s 1971 war. However, he denied all the charges.
