The popular social networking and micro-blogging site š¯•¸ (formerly known as Twitter) has never been banned in the United Arab Emirates (UAE); however, Dubai once blocked it.
The Emirate of Dubai unilaterally blocked the Twitter or š¯•¸ in 2008, alleging that its content wasnā€™t consistent with the religious, moral and political values of the region.
Elsewhere in the UAE, the micro-blogging site has been operating uninterruptedly since the outset.
In the past, Twitter or now š¯•¸ has been blocked by the authorities in Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, TĆ¼rkiye, Uganda, and UAE (Dubai only).
While presently the site remains blocked in China, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.
Recently, billionaire Elon Musk ā€“ who acquired the Twitter last year after sealing a US$ 44 billion deal and later rebranded it into š¯•¸ ā€“ has now announced that the blocking feature will be removed for users of š¯•¸, saying that it “makes no sense”.
