ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Qatar and Pakistan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on strengthening co-operation on marine meteorological services.

The MoU was signed by the meteorology department of Qatar Civil Aviation Authority (QCAA) and Pakistan Meteorological Department in Doha, Gulf Times reported on Thursday.

The MoU is expected to facilitate the establishment of a production centre and marine data collection in support of the meteorological information and services for the Arabian Gulf region.

The centre would comply with the principles of World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and it would be registered as Data Collection and Production Centre (DCPC) in the framework of the WMO Information System to facilitate the collection and sharing of the centre’s information sources.

The objective of the MoU is to outline the collaborative working arrangements on the marine meteorological services and also to support Global Maritime Distress and Safety System.

The scope of the co-operation includes activities related to the capacity development of marine meteorology, numerical weather prediction and modelling, data assimilation and prediction in the field of meteorology.

The MoU also supports activities related to climate variability and climate change research and hazardous marine related weather events with mutual exchange of scientific and technical experts in the field.
