PakistanSecretary ECP says Election Commission empowered to order delimitation

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was authorized to issue its directives regarding delimitation in any constituency and at any time, as it deemed necessary, Secretary Election Commission Ishtiaq Ahmed said on Tuesday.

Section 10-A of the Delimitation of Constituencies Act of 1974 empowers  the ECP to make amendments, alterations or modifications in the final list of constituencies ‘ as it feels necessary’, the Secretary ECP told media over the issue of delimitation of Karachi’s constituencies.

Talking about the cases of fake-degree-holding parliamentarians, Ishtiaq said that the commission had sent 34 such cases for necessary action.

His remarks came after the Supreme Court expressed concern, over the slow process of the implementation of the apex court’s verdict in the fake-degree case, and ordered on Tuesday for action within two days.

The ECP Secretary defended the process saying that law takes its own course. He said that the district and session judges had so far decided two cases of the fake degree holders whereas 35 other cases were sent to the relevant courts.

In all 69 cases were brought to the notice of the election commission in which lawmakers were accused of holding fake degrees, he added.

Ishtiaq further said that the case of Jamshed Dasti has also been sent to the relevant court for a decision.
