WorldAfghan forces recapture Kunduz, Taliban driven out

KABUL, Afghanistan: The Afghan security forces have managed to retake the northern Kunduz City following a three-day severe battle with the Taliban militants.

The Taliban militants had occupied the strategic northern city of Kunduz on Monday which eventually led the insurgents to take control of several important buildings including a hospital and the Central Jail.

Later, the Afghan forces supported by the US military planes and the North-Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces initiated the operation in Kunduz to free the city from the Taliban.

A number of casualties including civilian deaths took place due to the fighting between the two sides and finally the Afghan government forces on Thursday succeeded to recapture the Kunduz City.

However, according to reports, the fighting is still going on in parts of the city.

“Afghan special forces now control Kunduz City, it is retaken and being cleared of terrorists,” the Afghan Interior Ministry Spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said on Twitter.

Sediqqi said that the Taliban militants suffered heavy casualties.

In a statement, the Afghan Ministry of Defence said that 150 Taliban militants were killed and 90 other wounded in last night Kunduz operation.

The Afghan forces hoisted the national flag in Kunduz City Central Square after they drove the Taliban fighters from the city.

“Afghan soldiers took down the white-and-black Taliban flag in the city square and hoisted the government flag,” a resident of Kunduz Abdul Rahman told a foreign news agency.
