ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Foreign Office said on Thursday that relations between Pakistan and Russia are independent of any influence from any other country.

“Russia is an important country and we want to enhance relations with it in all fields of mutual interests,” the Foreign Office Spokesman Qazi Khalilullah said at his weekly media briefing in Islamabad on Thursday.

The spokesman said that Pakistan and Russia relations are on an upward trajectory over the last couple of years.

Qazi Khalilullah also said that Pakistan has embarked upon a policy of constructive engagement with countries in the region and beyond.

Recently, the two countries have increased their bilateral cooperation especially in defence sector as in November last year, they signed a defence cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening military-to-military relations.

The Pakistan army chief General Raheel Sharif is also currently in Russia on a three-day visit to witness the ‘Army-2015′ international military forum in Kubinka near Moscow.

General Raheel during his visit also held separate meetings with the Russian Deputy Defence Minister Anatoly Antonov and the Chairman State Duma of Russian Federation in Moscow.

During the meetings, the two sides discussed ways to enhance defence cooperation and more military exchanges to benefit from each others’ combat experience.
