Nawaz vows not to tolerate corruption in any circumstance

GILGIT, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said that corruption will not be tolerated in any circumstance, and directed the concerned authorities in Gilgit-Baltistan to spend development funds in transparent manner.

In his address at a meeting of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council in Gilgit on Tuesday, the prime minister said that Gilgit-Baltistan will be brought at par with developed parts of the country.

During the meeting, the Governor Gilgit-Baltistan Chaudhry Barjees Tahir gave a briefing on development projects.

The governor said that a special force is being established for the security of Shahra-e-Karakoram. He said that a policy for protection of forests has been formulated for 30 years.

Barjees Tahir said that the people of the area is thankful to the government for development package of Rs47 billion for Gilgit-Baltistan.

The meeting was also briefed on Timber Policy prepared in consultation with all the stakeholders on the directives of the prime minister.

In addition, the Gilgit-Baltistan Council approved the budget of the council for 2014-15. The meeting also passed Gilgit Baltistan Tahafuz-e-Pakistan Bill 2015.

Earlier, the prime minister arrived in Gilgit to inaugurate a number of developmental projects including cardiology hospital, boosters of PTV, widening of Skardu-Jaglot highway and three hydro power projects in Gilgit-Baltistan.

The prime minister was accompanied by the Federal Minister for Information Pervaiz Rasheed, Special Assistant to Prime Minster Irfan Siddiqui and Chairman Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Marvi Memon.
