Chris Gayle hits first ever World Cup double century

CANBERRA: West Indies opening batsman Chris Gayle set a couple of world records in an ICC Cricket World Cup match against Zimbabwe at the Manuka Oval in Canberra on Tuesday including hitting a first ever World Cup double hundred.

The 35-year-old hard-hitting lefthander scored 215 runs off 147 balls with 16 sixes and 10 fours before he was caught out on the last ball of the innings.

With 16 sixes in his inning, Chris Gayle also equaled the world record of most number of sixes in a one-day international (ODI). Earlier, South Africa’s AB de Villiers and India’s Rohit Sharma had also hit 16 sixes in a match.

Chris Gayle also scored the fastest double century in an ODI. It took him just 138 balls to reach 200.

In addition, Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels broke the 16-year-old world record for the highest partnership in the history of ODI cricket for any wicket. The previous record was held by India’s Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid who put on 331 for the second wicket against New Zealand in Hyderabad in 1999.

The previous highest partnership at a World Cup was 318 between India’s Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid against Sri Lanka in Taunton in 1999.

In total, while batting first West Indies scored 372 runs for the loss of two wickets in allotted 50 overs against Zimbabwe in the 15th match of the 11th edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 jointly being held in Australia and New Zealand from February 14 to March 29.
