Two murder convicts executed in AJK

MUZAFFARABAD: Two murder convicts have been hanged in the Central Jail Mirpur, one of the largest cities of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

The executions of Muhammad Riaz and Muhammad Fayaz were the first in the Pakistan-administered Kashmir region since the lifting of moratorium on death penalty in December last year.

The AJK Shariat Court had awarded them the death penalty in November 2005, a year after they killed the Advocate General of Azad Kashmir during a robbery at his home in Mirpur.

The convicts belonged to a village near Sara-i-Alamgir tehsil of Punjab’s Gujrat district.

Following the executions, bodies of the convicts were handed over to their respective families.

On December 17, Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ended a six-year moratorium on death penalty following the Peshawar army public school attack that left 150 persons mostly school children dead.

With two more executions in AJK, the number of hanged convicted criminals across the country has reached 24 since the lifting of moratorium on death penalty.
