Four militants sentenced to death in ISI office attack case

MULTAN, Pakistan: An anti-terrorism court in Multan on Tuesday awarded death penalties to four militants for their involvement in an attack on an Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) office in 2009.

Two militants armed with guns and rocket launchers while driving an explosive-laden vehicle attacked an office of the ISI in Qasim Bela area of Multan on December 8, 2009. Subsequently, at least 12 persons were killed while nearly 50 injured.

During the hearing of the case today, the anti-terrorism court judge sentenced four suspects including Hafiz Salman, Abdul Raheem, Muhammad Afzal and Sajjad to death. In addition, the court also awarded 25-year imprisonment to another suspect Ejaz in the same case.

The convicts belong to Qari Imran group of the banned Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ).

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif lifted a moratorium on executions of death row prisoners in the country on December 17, a day after the army public school in Peshawar was hit by a deadly terror attack that left 150 persons mostly children dead.

Since the removal of ban on the death penalty, 15 death row convicts have so far been executed in different jails across the country.
