Special courts to be set-up under constitutional amendment: Nawaz

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Friday that the special courts will be set-up for trying terrorists under a constitutional amendment for a specific period of two years.

In his address at the meeting of heads of all parliamentary parties in Islamabad on Friday afternoon, the prime minister expressed hope that the special courts would yield results within this period.

The meeting was aimed at viewing the progress so far made in implementation of the 20-point national action plan on counter terrorism adopted on December 24 in the wake of the terror attack on the army public school in Peshawar.

The heads of political parties, key cabinet members, chief ministers of four provinces and the military leadership attended the meeting.

During the meeting, the prime minister urged the political leadership to finalize the draft of the constitutional amendment for setting up special courts, adding that the draft of the bill has been prepared after a process of thorough consultations with all the stakeholders.

The prime minister expressed hope that all the participants of the meeting would endorse it.

Sharif said that the draft should be tabled in the National Assembly session today.

Nawaz Sharif said that the nation now wants to see the national action plan on counter terrorism in action so that the country could be purged of the scourge of terrorism once for all.

The premier also recognized maturity demonstrated by leaders of all political parties, saying it is a matter of satisfaction that the political leadership is taking key decisions.

“We wants to see the country a peaceful place where the citizens have no terror threat,” Sharif said.
