Non-bailable arrest warrant issued for Maulana Abdul Aziz

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: An Islamabad court on Friday issued non-bailable arrest warrant for the Lal Masjid’s Chief Cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz for allegedly threatening members of civil society.

The arrest warrant was issued by the senior civil judge Saqib Jawad while hearing a case filed by civil society members.

During the hearing, the investigation officer of the case requested the court to issue an arrest warrant for Maulana Abdul Aziz for investigation, based on a first information Report (FIR) that was previously registered at Aabpara Police Station against the cleric.

The senior civil judge accepted the investigation officer’s request and an arrest warrant was issued, which will be followed by the police taking legal procedures to arrest Aziz for further investigation.

The non-bailable FIR was registered under section 506 (2) of the Pakistan penal code which states punishment for criminal intimidation or threats.

The civil society activists held a series of protests against the Lal Masjid’s chief cleric after he refused to condemn the deadly terror attack on an army-run school in Peshawar.

Nearly 150 persons mostly school children lost their lives in the attack carried out by the militants wearing the Frontier Corps (FC) personnel uniform on December 16.

“It is inappropriate to condemn one incident and remain silent on the other,” Maulana Abdul Aziz said while talking to a television channel following the Peshawar incident.
