JUI-F doesn’t support establishment of military courts: Fazl

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) Chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman has said that it is wrong to perceive that his party supported the establishment of military courts.

Under the national action plan, the political parties approved on Wednesday in a meeting in Islamabad, it was agreed that military courts will be setup for a period of two years for swift disposal of terrorism cases.

All the political parties including the Pakistan Tehreek-e- Insaf (PTI), the Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q), the Qaumi Watan Party (QWP), Awami National Party (ANP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the JUI-F extended support for setting up military courts.

Earlier, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) expressed reservations about military courts but later it also agreed on the setting up of military tribunals.

Talking to media in Islamabad on Thursday after addressing scholars of religious seminaries at a meeting, the JUI-F chief said that his party did not favor the idea of setting up military courts but had to extend its support in this regard in view of the existing situation.

“It is incorrect to say that JUI-F endorses the idea of constituting military courts to try suspected terrorists,” Fazl said.

The JUI-F chief said that it is unfortunate see the unity among the political leadership after an incident of immense gravity such as the Peshawar school massacre.

Fazl further said that national consensus is necessary for solution of problems confronting the nation.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman said that religious seminaries always opposed terrorism and worked for the harmony among different schools of thought.
