Federal govt will soon announce cut in electricity prices: PM spokesman

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan: The federal government will soon announce the decrease in electricity prices as its top priority is to provide relief to the people.

The remarks were made by Dr Musadik Malik, the spokesperson to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, at a press briefing in Islamabad on Thursday.

The prime minister’s spokesperson said that earlier the government also decreased the petroleum prices.

A reduction was announced by the prime minister in petrol prices by Rs 9.66 per litre on November 29 while earlier on October 31 the prime minister announced reduction in the price of petrol by Rs 9.43 per litre in order to provide relief to public.

The spokesman while talking about the electricity crises said that the government is working on multiple energy projects including Dasu dam, production of electricity with the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), CASA-1000 and others.

Dr Musadik Malik said that he along with the federal minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Shahid Khaqan Abbasi visited Qatar where they held fruitful meetings with top Qatari leadership including Ameer of Qatar.

The prime minister’s spokesperson said that both the sides deliberated on the broad energy security framework which covers LNG imports from Qatar, production of electricity with LNG, construction of gas pipeline between Qatar and Pakistan, fertilizer imports and agriculture sector.

Moreover, the spokesman said that the Qatari leadership expressed their desire to invest in Pakistan’s food and agriculture sector and land development.

Process of IDPs’ rehabilitation would begin soon

In the press conference, the prime minister’s spokesman further said that the process of rehabilitation of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) of North Waziristan would begin soon.

Malik said that the government is planning their safe return to their homes and this process will take four to six weeks.

The spokesman said that after completion of planning, over 1,000 families will be returning to their homes every day in North Waziristan.

The government is committed to provide better services and environment to IDPs upon their return to their homes, he added.
