PakistanGovt rejects opposition’s proposed names for interim PM

ISLAMABAD: Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Saturday that the government had reservations over the names of Justice retired Nasir Aslam Zahid and Rasool Bakhsh Palejo as interim Prime Minister, Dispatch News Desk (DND) reported.

Talking to media persons in Islamabad, the federal minister said Justice Zahid would not be able to do justice with the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP)‚ as President Asif Ali Zardari was implicated in the murder of the former judge’s brother-in-law.

The minister also rejected Rasool Bux Palejo’s nomination as caretaker PM, saying Palejo’s son Latif Palejo was contesting against the PPP in Sindh.

Kaira said the government is trying to create unanimity over caretaker setup and the today’s meeting between the Prime Minister and all four chief ministers is also aimed to reach a consensus on the matter.

On Friday, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan rejected all three nominees proposed by the Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf for caretaker Prime Minister..

The PM, in a letter written to the opposition leader, had proposed the names of former Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Sheikh, former director State Bank Dr Ishrat Hussain, and former chief justice of the Balochistan High Court, Mir Hazar Khan Khoso for caretaker PM.

The Information Minister said he was at a loss to understand the objections raised by the opposition leader over the names proposed by the Prime Minister for the slot of caretaker chief executive.
