Pakistan assures support to China in cracking down on Xinjiang militants

BEIJING, China: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a meeting with the Chinese President Xi Jingping in Beijing on Saturday assured Pakistan’s support to China in cracking down on terrorist forces like the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM).

The ETIM is an Islamic terrorist and separatist organization founded by Uyghur militants in western region of Xinjiang with an aim to establish the independence of East Turkestan from China.

The Chinese government blames the ETIM for being a violent separatist movement and often responsible for terrorist attacks in Xinjiang.

During the meeting with President Xi Jingping, Sharif agreed that Pakistan will strengthen cooperation with China in building infrastructure and maintaining regional stability.

The prime minister pledged that Pakistan supports China’s stance on all major issues, especially on those involving China’s core interests.

Sharif also held a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Li Keqiang in Beijing and discussed bilateral relations and regional situation.

The two sides agreed to boost their relations in diverse fields with focus on economy and energy.

The Pakistani premier is currently on a three-day official visit to China, hoping that his visit will further strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries.

Pakistan and China signed more than 20 agreements and memorandum of understandings (MoUs) today which will help promote cooperation between the two countries in the fields of energy and infrastructure under the economic corridor project, and other sectors.
