Wanda McDonald becomes the first Sikh woman to wear turban while serving in Royal Canadian Navy

Monitoring Desk: Ottawa: Master Seaman Wanda McDonald has become the first Sikh woman to wear the turban while serving in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), reports voiceonline.com.

Wanda McDonald joined the RCN in 1997 and became interested in the Sikh faith three years ago and converted into Sikhism. She requested permission to wear the turban on duty.

According to a press release issued by World Sikh Organization (WSO) of Canada, WSO was contacted by the Canadian authorities for consultation so WSO informed the authorities that turban was compulsory for both Sikh men and women.

The Canadian Forces have allowed both Sikh men and women to wear turbans and the Sikh articles of faith while serving.
