Scotland holds independence referendum today

LONDON: The people in Scotland are casting their votes on Thursday to decide whether the country should stay in the United Kingdom or become an independent nation.

The independence referendum could result in Scotland’s separation from the UK after more than 300 years of political union.

The voters are being be asked to answer “Yes” or “No” to the question: “Should Scotland be an independent country?”

A total of 4,285,323 people are registered to vote at 2,608 polling places across the country between 07:00 and 22:00 on Thursday.

The votes will be counted in each of Scotland’s 32 local authority areas while the result is expected early on Friday morning.
