ISLAMABAD: The Foreign Office said on Thursday that the spying of a major political party of Pakistan by the US spy agency is against the international laws, adding that the matter is being taken up with the United States authorities.

The Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam made these remarks at her weekly press briefing in Islamabad on Thursday.

The US National Security Agency (NSA) was reportedly allowed in 2010 to carry out surveillance on the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) along with India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood among other outfits.

Earlier, the PPP expressed concern over media reports that the US NSA spied its activities in 2010.

In a statement, the PPP spokesperson Senator Farhatullah Babar strongly condemned the move and termed it as violation of international law.

The leader of opposition in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah said that the United States has no right to spy activities of any party or individual. He said that the PPP will write a letter to the US embassy in this connection.

On Wednesday, India summoned senior US diplomats in New Delhi to lodge a protest over the issue, calling it ‘unacceptable’ and seeking an assurance from the US that it won’t happen again.
