Helmand Battle: Taliban are retreating from Sangin, Nawzad, Mosa Qala

Kabul: According to report coming from Helmand, stiff battle between Afghan Taliban and Afghan security forces is now cooling down and Taliban are retreating from the areas of Sangin, Nawzad and Mosa Qala. It is expected Taliban will again attack government buildings after tactical retreat.

Afghan family, police killed by Taliban bombs in Helmand province

It may be mentioned that clashes in southern Helmand spread in three districts when around 800 Taliban took control of police stations and official buildings. Governor Helmand Mohammad Naeem claimed Pakistani forces were fighting alongside the Taliban and alleged that attacks were planned in Quetta.

Initial reports suggested that about 350 persons including around 100 Taliban were killed in clashes. However neither Taliban nor Afghan government officially released any figure about their causalities. The clashes displaced around 3,000 families from respective areas. Meanwhile, local police chief claimed that 500 Taliban fighters, including foreigners, had been killed and wounded during the weeklong fighting.

Reinforcements and heavy weaponry had arrived in the district, where a long-term security plan was being implemented, he said, without explaining where the guerrillas had gone.
