ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has performed the ground breaking of the 4,320 megawatt Dasu hydro electric power project at Dassu in District Kohistan on Wednesday (today).

The project will be completed in two phases, the first phase will be completed in five years time which will add 2,160 megawatt electricity to the national grid.

The World Bank will provide $one billion for the Dasu project.

In his address at the ground breaking ceremony, the prime minister said that Dasu hydel power project will prove to be a milestone to address the electricity shortage in the country.

The prime minister said that hydel resources will fully be exploited to overcome electricity crisis. He said that work on Diamer Basha dam will also be started soon.

Sharif said that power projects of 40,000 megawatt could be installed on the river Indus while currently only 7,000 megawatt electricity is being generated from it.
