Geo News transmissions still on-air despite cancellation of its Licence

MediaGeo News transmissions still on-air despite cancellation of its Licence

Islamabad: Geo Television transmission is still on-air despite of cancellation of its Licence for 15 days by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).

Geo can be seen live on its website http://live.geo.tv/live.aspx  Legal observers are of the view that Geo can not trasmit news from any medium digital, braodcast or webtv after cancellation of its Licence as according to rule of Law. However Geo television administration believes that it can transmit news through its web portal. Political observers claim this is not possible without the help of government because Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) did not close IP address of Geo live transmission.

PEMRA bans Geo and licence has been suspended by PEMRA for 15 days. Geo News licence had been suspended by Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) for 15 days on June 6. A fine of Rs. 10 million was also imposed on the media group.

It may be mentioned private members banned Geo but PEMRA did not accept their decision in past. Now PEMRA gave same decision that was given before but this time ban is only for 15 days.

Geo Television has commented on this decision of PEMRA and said:

“Geo News was not provided with any evidence nor was its stance heard by the Pemra”.

It may be mentioned that GEO Television and Jang Group of Publication served defamation notice to Defence Ministry of Pakistan yesterday as it had knowledge that PEMRA would ban it for certain period of time.
