PM Nawaz assures full legal assistance to Altaf Hussain

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Wednesday that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain is a Pakistani citizen and the government will provide all possible legal assistance to him, an official spokesman said.

His statement came a day after the MQM Chief was arrested on the charge of money laundering from his residence in north-west London by the British police.

The prime minister and the federal minister for interior Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan held telephonic conversations with the Governor Sindh Dr. Ishrat ul Ebad and inquired about the health of Altaf Hussain.

Sharif also prayed for early recovery of the MQM Chief and asked the governor to keep him informed about the development of Altaf Hussain’s case.

The interior minister said the federal government will remain in touch with the Governor Sindh regarding the case.

Meanwhile, the MQM Leader Wasay Jalil said that although the London police wanted to question party Chief Altaf Hussain in relation to money laundering, he was moved to a hospital due to ill health. He said that doctors would carry out a number of tests on Hussain.

Jalil said that the MQM was in cooperation with the British police over its investigations in matters relating to alleged money laundering and the murder of Imran Farooq.

The residence of the MQM Chief was sealed after the search of his London home was concluded by the British police. The search was carried out by 40 personnel of the police including members of the forensic team, media reports said.
