Pakistan emphasizes need for comprehensive vision of security in Asia

SHANGHAI: Pakistan on Wednesday emphasized the need for a comprehensive vision of security in Asia, adding that a comprehensive, cooperative and sustained security can benefit all states, particularly if it is based on mutual trust and takes into account legitimate security concerns of all countries in the region.

In his address at the fourth summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in Shanghai on Wednesday, President Mamnoon Hussain underscored significance of interdependence in political, military, economic and socio-cultural relationship among the Asian states.

The president said that confidence building measures and peaceful resolution of disputes would help achieve the objectives of collective security.

“Pakistan is desirous of a stable, peaceful and prosperous Asia,” the president said.

Mamnoon Hussain said that his country seeks friendship and good neighborly relations with India. He said the Pakistani government stands ready to engage in a meaningful and sustained dialogue with the new government in New Delhi to address outstanding issues and establish friendly and cooperative bilateral relations.

The president said that Pakistan is also committed to working together with Afghanistan to expand bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

“A peaceful and stable Afghanistan is essential for peace and stability in the region,” he said.

“Pakistan is (also) desirous of seeing a stable and peaceful Middle East and hopes all disputes in the region would be resolved peacefully through dialogue,” he said.

Mamnoon Hussain said that Pakistan will continue to support the just cause of the people of Palestine.

“Pakistan condemns terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” Mamnoon said.

Moreover, he said that Pakistan will continue to pursue the goals of disarmament and non-proliferation and adhere to the policy of credible minimum deterrence without entering into an arms race.

President Mamnoon said that access to nuclear technology is vital for meeting the growing energy needs and contributing to development and economic growth of Pakistan.
