SC suspends Maulana Ahmed Ludhianvi’s victory notification

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan on Tuesday suspended the notification about the victory of the Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat’s (ASWJ) Maulana Muhammad Ahmed Ludhianvi from NA-89 Jhang. It may be mentioned that Muhammad Akram got 74,324 votes while Ludhianvi bagged  71,598 votes. Complete results of NA-89 can be read to click this link

Maulana Ahmed Ludhianvi was declared winner from Jhang after the Election Tribunal in Faisalabad disqualified Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) MNA Sheikh Muhammad Akram, who was elected from NA-89 Jhang, for his failure to mention the FIR registered against him in his nomination form.

Later, the tribunal had directed the Election Commission of Punjab to notify that the runner-up candidate Maulana Muhammad Ahmad Ludhianvi of the ASWJ, was elected.

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court headed by Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali suspended the victory notification of the ASWJ Chief in Islamabad on Tuesday in response to a petition filed by Sheikh Akram against the Election Tribunal and ECP’s decision.

The bench said that the tribunal did not give enough reasons for the disqualification. It also said that the tribunal’s decision did not take into account the ground realities in the constituency and the number of votes each candidate received.

The bench issued notices to all the respondents and asked the tribunal to re-evaluate the situation and inform the court within three months.
