Pakistan closes its border with Afghanistan on eve of Afghan polls

QUETTA: Pakistan has closed its border with Afghanistan on Friday morning to avert any untoward incident on the eve of Afghan presidential elections.

The move comes a day before Afghanistan will hold its third presidential and provincial council elections since the fall of the Taliban while the Taliban have vowed a campaign of violence to disrupt the polls, urging their fighters to attack polling staff, voters and security forces in the run-up to election day.

An official of the Frontier Corps (FC) said that the Pak-Afghan border at Friendship gate in Chaman has completely been closed.

The FC personnel have been deployed on the Pakistani side of the border to maintain order on the eve of historic Afghan elections. Similarly, the Afghan border force has also strengthened security to ensure peace on the eve of polls.

Earlier, Pakistan announced to maintain strict vigilance on its borders with Afghanistan to avert any untoward situation.

“Security will be beefed up on the borders with Afghanistan on the day of elections there,” said the Pakistani foreign office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam during her weekly media briefing in Islamabad on Thursday.
