Nawaz chairs high-level meeting on national security

ISLAMABAD: A high level meeting was held in Islamabad on Friday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to discuss security situation in the country and progress over the peace talks with the Taliban.

During the meeting, the Afghan presidential elections and withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan also came into consideration.

The meeting was attended by Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Prime Minister’s Special Assistant on Foreign Affairs Tariq Fatemi, Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif and Director General ISI Lieutenant General Zaheer-ul-Islam.

The interior minister said that the direct talks between the government and Taliban was progressing adding that the talks were being held within the parameters of the Constitution.

Meanwhile, the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said in a statement issued to the media that the Taliban Shura has extended the deadline until April 10 and would sit after that to decide about the future of talks.

The TTP spokesman said that the terror outfit has asked its fighters not to carry out any attacks against the government and law enforcement agencies until further orders.
