Thai constitutional court nullifies February election, orders new elections

BANGKOK: A constitutional court in Thailand on Friday nullified the general elections held in February 2 because voting was not held for the entire country on the same day as required by the country’s constitution.

The court ordered for new elections in the country. However, it was unclear when a new vote would be held.

Under the constitution of Thailand a general election must be held on a single day across the country but 28 constituencies out of 375 nationwide were unable to hold voting because no candidates were registered amid anti-government protests.

On Tuesday, the Thai government ended a state of emergency in force for almost two months in Bangkok and surrounding areas following a sharp decrease in the number of demonstrators.
