Indian authorities withdraw sedition case against Kashmiri students

NEW DELHI: The Indian authorities have withdrawn sedition case against a group of Kashmiri students who were booked for cheering the victory of Pakistan against its arch rival India in a cricket match in the Asia Cup.

The move came after the issue turned into a political hot button in New Delhi‚ Srinagar and Islamabad.

However, the state officials said that they would continue to investigate allegations of disrupting communal harmony against these students.

The Indian police had registered a case of sedition under section 124a, 153 a, and 427 against 67 Kashmiri students of Swami Vivekanand Subharti University (SVSU) in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, who had been suspended following their alleged anti-national act while celebrating Pakistan`s win over India in a Asia Cup cricket match on Sunday.

On Thursday, Pakistan said that its hearts and doors of its educational institutions are open for Kashmiri students expelled from Indian University.

“It is unfortunate‚ if the Kashmiri students celebrating Pakistan Cricket Team’s victory are charged with sedition,” Foreign Office Spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said during her weekly press briefing in Islamabad.

“Pakistan will welcome all these students in its educational institutions if they want to complete their studies,” the spokesperson added.
