JI to remain part of peace dialogue process

ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) would remain part of the peace dialogue process between the government and the Taliban.

It was decided at a JI meeting presided over by party’s chief Syed Munawar Hasan in Islamabad on Wednesday. During the meeting, the JI decided to back the dialogue process and play a role for restoration of peace.

Professor Muhammad Ibrahim, the JI’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief and a member of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) peace committee, said that his party would remain involved in the peace process. He added that peace could be restored in the country if two sides sit together with open hearts.

The peace committees nominated by the government and the TTP are expected to meet on Thursday.

The preliminary peace talks between the two sides which were scheduled to be held on Tuesday were delayed after the government committee refused to hold talks with the committee constituted by the Taliban, seeking clarifications on certain matters from the TTP’s negotiating team.
