UN voices concern over ongoing political conflict in Thailand

UNITED NATIONS: The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has voiced great concern over the ongoing political conflict in Thailand and urged disputing parties in the country to bridge political differences through dialogue.

The UN chief said that the UN cannot condone any action that undermines democratic processes and hinders the democratic right of the Thai people.

The political crisis continues to prevail in the Southeast Asian country even after the February 2 election that was marred by bloody clashes and massive demonstrations.

“While he [Ban Ki-moon] recognizes the complexity of the situation and that some chose not to participate in the election, the Secretary-General is concerned that a number of Thai people were not able to exercise their right to vote,” the UN press statement said.

The statement reiterated that the UN chief has demanded all parties to settle their differences based on negotiation, compromise and respect for democratic principles.

“Any action that undermines democratic processes and hinders the democratic right of the Thai people cannot be condoned,” the UN chief said.
