Senior Egyptian interior ministry official shot dead in Cairo

CAIRO: A senior Egyptian Interior Ministry official was shot dead outside his home in the capital Cairo on Tuesday, a foreign news agency citing a security official reported.

“General Mohamed Saeed, head of the technical office of the minister of interior, was targeted by gunmen inside a car who shot him and fled,” said the official.

Meanwhile, the interior ministry confirmed the killing of Mohamed Saeed, an aide to Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim.

On the other hand, the Syrian peace talks in Geneva between delegations representing the Bashar al-Assad-led government and foreign-backed opposition would resume on Tuesday.

In a statement on Monday, UN-Arab League Special Representative for Syria Lakhdar Brahimi said that talks between the two sides did not produce much, adding that he would bring the two sides together again on Tuesday for another attempt at political discussions.

“Tomorrow we are going to put forward the Geneva communiqué… Then we are going to decide with them how we are going to proceed in discussing its many elements,” Brahimi said, referring to a text agreed by world powers in June 2012 that calls for the establishment of a transitional governing body in Syria.

“We are doing what the situation allows, what the market can bear,” Brahimi added.

On Monday, the Syrian peace talks between the Syrian government and the foreign-backed opposition hit a deadlock over divisive issue of transferring power to transitional government.

Moscow says it won’t allow US to silence UNSC on Israeli violence against Palestinians Monitoring Desk: Russian envoy in United Nations Vasily Nebenzya said that the UN Security Council should bring peace, stability and prosperity to the Middle East and Russia would not allow United States to silence UNSC over the issue of Gaza crisis. According to TASS news Agency, Nebenzya said that Moscow will continue to call for an end to violence against Palestinians and will not allow the US to muzzle the UN Security Council as Washington seeks to support Israel's operation in Gaza. "We will continue to stand firmly for ending violence against the Palestinians. Without a shadow of a doubt, we will continue to expose the abuses and sanctimony with which the US is handling the situation. We will not allow the Americans to gag the entire council with their hands in an effort to encourage further continuation of Israel's ruthless operation," he said in a speech at the Security Council.
