Shutter down strike in Sindh against Altaf’s statement

KARACHI: A shutter down strike was being observed in parts of Sindh on Saturday on the call of Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz (JSMM) against what it called the British government’s silence over Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) chief Altaf Hussain’s statement about division of the province.

In a statement on Friday, the JSMM chairman Shafi Burfat said that if the British government remained silent while its soil was used against Sindh then its interests in the province would be at stake.

The sources said that all the shops and business centres were closed in Sindh interior including the cities/towns of Larkana, Dadu, Sukkur, Shikarpur, Sehwan and Nawabshah, while traffic on the roads remained thin.

Likewise, shops and petrol pumps were also closed in Naushehroferoze, Tando Muhammad Khan, Jamshoro, Mehar and other small towns of Sindh interior.

However, partial strike was being observed in the second largest city of Sindh, Hyderabad, as business centres remained closed at Qasimabad, Hussainabad, Autobhan Road and Gull Centre, while the road traffic was less than normal. Besides, traffic to and from Sindh interior on Indus Highway and Super Highway was also hit by the strike causing great inconvenience to the citizens.

Meanwhile, five persons were killed in separate incidents of violence in different areas of Karachi, the rescue sources said on Saturday.
