Zaka Ashraf’s reinstatement as PCB chairman challenged in SC

ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Thursday withdrew a petition it filed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan against the restoration of Chaudhry Zaka Ashraf as the Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

Earlier in the day, the government filed a petition in the apex court challenging the reinstatement of Zaka Ashraf as the PCB chairman, and appointed a prominent lawyer and rights activist Asma Jahangir as its counsel in the case.

On January 15, a two-member bench of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) comprising Justice Riaz Ahmed Khan and Justice Noorul Haq Qureshi reinstated Zaka Ashraf to his post on his intra-court appeal.

Ashraf was appointed as PCB chairman on October 27, 2011 by the then President Asif Ali Zardari. However, in June 2013, the IHC judge Justice Shaukat Aziz stopped him from working as PCB chief after hearing a petition challenging his election on the grounds that the process of his election was not transparent.

Later, Ashraf filed an intra-court appeal against his dismissal from the post of PCB chairman. In response to which, the IHC on Jan 15 annulled the court’s previous decision and reinstated Ashraf to his post.
