Court defers ex-PM Ashraf’s indictment till January 3

ISLAMABAD: An accountability court in Islamabad did not indict former Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf on Saturday as it adjourned the hearing related to a multi-billion Rental Power Projects (RPPs) scam till January 3.

During today’s proceedings, Farooq H Naek‚ the counsel of the former prime minister‚ informed the court that he had filed an application in the Lahore High Court (LHC) pertaining to the case and the hearing was underway.

Naek contended that a reference could only be filed in the accountability court after the decision of the LHC, adding that only then could the former premier be indicted.

The former premier’s counsel said that there was no charge of corruption against his client and nor was there any evidence to prove him guilty, adding that RPPs had been undertaken before Ashraf came into power as prime minister of the country.

The court, after hearing the application, deferred the indictment of former prime minister in the RPPs case and adjourned the hearing till January 3.

Later talking to media after appearing before the accountability court, Raja Pervez Ashraf said that rental power corruption case against him was unduly politicized and that the case should have not been left for the court to decide.

The former premier said that all facts about the so-called corruption in rental power projects should have been made public. He said that the rental power projects started in 2006, adding several other people had been associated with the projects but he had been singled out in the case.

Meanwhile, Farooq H Naek said that there was no corruption charge on Ashraf, adding his client had not got benefit of even a single penny while awarding contracts for rental power projects.
