Thai protesters demand treason trial of Yingluck Shinawatra

BANGKOK: The pressure is mounting on Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra as anti-government protesters have begun demanding treason trial of her.

Yingluck Shinawatra had appointed herself as interim prime minister and had said that her cabinet was legally-bound to act as an interim government until the elections after she announced on Monday the dissolution of the lower house of Parliament and proposed fresh elections be held on February 2.

But the protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban, who resigned as a lawmaker to lead protesters, had given a 24-hour ultimatum to Yingluck Shinawatra to resign.

However, Yingluck Shinawatra refused to step down as demanded by the anti-government protesters ahead of February elections and urged the demonstrators to stop protests and choose the next government through the electoral system.

Subsequently, addressing anti-government protesters camping out at Government House, Suthep Thaugsuban said that police should arrest Yingluck Shinawatra for treason because she did not meet our orders within the given time.
