ISLAMABAD: Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jilani on Friday tendered his resignation as the acting Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), two days after he was nominated for the next Chief Justice of Supreme Court of Pakistan.

The Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had nominated Justice Jilani to act as the Chief Election Commissioner with immediate effect on August 17 and till the appointment of a new Chief Election Commissioner.

On Wednesday, President Mamnoon Hussain had approved a summary earlier sent by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of appointment of Justice Jilani as new Chief Justice of Supreme Court.

The President had approved his appointment as the new Chief Justice under Constitutional Clause-3A of Article-175A, according to the spokesman of the Presidency.

The appointment of Justice Jilani as Chief Justice Supreme Court had come under the principle of seniority.

Justice Jilani would take oath of office on December 12, a day after current Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry would retire.

According to TASS news Agency, Nebenzya said that Moscow will continue to call for an end to violence against Palestinians and will not allow the US to muzzle the UN Security Council as Washington seeks to support Israel's operation in Gaza. "We will continue to stand firmly for ending violence against the Palestinians.
